Could be great

The 3 CDs only contain BLUES BACKING TRACKS to jam to.
I thought that the "2000 licks" would have been recorded so that I could follow with the tab that they provide, but this is not the case. That was just a dumb idea on the authors part to leave that out. I'm not a beginner, and I have read tab without listening to an example with good results before, but with most of the licks in this book, I cant follow them. No matter how much I try, most of them don't sound musical whatsoever.
Bummer.
The jam trax are fun though.

What a rip-off!

I asumed that since this book/3cds of 2000 licks would be giving a music/tab notation of each lick,in which it did,but also would include on the 3cds a recording of each lick on the guitar, in which it did not! Instead you get 3 cds of backing tracks and you are to figure out the 2000 licks yourself. I would have never bought this book if I had know that no recorded examples of these 2000 licks were not included! Lawrence Fritts has made one the worse learning guitar books ever! But wait there is more! Half of this rip-off book is upside down making this book more annoying! Don't buy this book, it is a rip-off!!! If your guitar could pay, it would not buy this book!

A must-have for any blues student.

This is an enormous book. Its pages are in sheet-music size and it's a full inch thick. Every page contains several individual licks in both tablature and standard notation.

The licks are broken into sensible chapters, based on note groupings and various playing techniques. All are in the key of C, and simple instructions for transpositions to other keys are on the first page of the book.

No space is wasted on lengthy expositions about style or meaning or technique, although each chapter has a brief description of the type of licks within it and some clues about the styles and players that use them. As soon as you flip past the index and one-page introduction, there are the licks-- all 2000 of 'em. I was going to count them to make sure, but they're numbered, so I didn't have to.

There are three CDs in the back containing 43 backing tracks in many styles, professionally recorded by actual live musicians. Many are good listening all by themselves, for those moments when your fingers are tired. You'll want to keep playing, though, 'cause you've got a lot of material to learn and have fun with!

My hat is off to Dr. Fritts-- this book will keep me busy for a long time and I'm going to be a much better musician because of it.

I'd recommend this book to anyone interested in Blues-- or Rock or Jazz, for that matter, since the licks would be useful across the board.

About the Author
Gabriel Garcia Marquez (1927- ) was born in Aracataca, Colombia. His most recent book, Memories of My Melancholy Whores, is his first new novel to be published in a decade and is available as a Penguin Paperback from August 2007. He is the author of several novels, works of non-fiction and collections of short stories, including Leaf Storm (1955); One Hundred Years of Solitude (1967); The Autumn of the Patriarch (1975); Chronicle of a Death Foretold (1981) and The General in His Labyrinth (1989). i love Gabo ... he is my favorite author ... i loved 100 hundred years of solitude, love in the time of cholera, of love & other demons , & all the other books ... but this one is the worst ever ... i tried to read it several times .. over & over & over ... but it was nothing but a bad bad book ...

go for any of his books except for this one ...

Creates questions, provides no answers.

This book confuses the beginner and is of no use to the experienced trader. Treating the market as a game against nature ignores the fact the the market is a collection of individuals and that the market is really a game between bulls and bears, not the reader and the market. The model is almost useless and provides no guidance on the most important aspect--WHEN to enter and leave the market (given historical data/volatility). He limits the concept of risk (which meams volatility) to downside risk and uses the term "normal distribution" too liberally. The only redeeming points are that he points out the importance of looking at market volatility and planning your trading strategy accordingly--knowing how much to risk and when; but for this he does not provide any measurable or quantifiable solutions (like a technical indicator would). The auther is obviously very intelligent but has reduced this idea so far to the common denominator that he has lost the essence. The book could have been so much more. I hope to see more work in the future.

Misleading, Wrong, Oversimplified...

The author confuses game theory with decision theory. The model has nothing related with game theory in it. The author defines the whole market as a game between the speculator and the remaining market, but does not take the remaining market's (the second player's) utility into consideration. Therefore the market's strategies are not utility-dependent but history-dependent which contradicts with the notion of game theory. This makes the model a simple choice selection of the speculator from just two alternatives faced with a market-move guess, not an equilibrium analysis as should be in a game-theoretic approach. Simply DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY by buying this book, and if you don't know much about game theory, don't read this book even if it was for free as you will misunderstand what game theory is.

Do not buy this book

I would prefer it if nobody else purchased this book. My only question is how long it will be before the techniques discribed in this book are discounted by the markets. Fortunately, if you have been banging your head on statistics, time series analysis, neural nets, genetic algorithms, etc. with respect to the markets as long as I have, certain embellishments to the logical principles explained in this work will suggest themselves. In this I take some comfort. I also take some comfort in the fact that not many will recognize these ideas for what they truly are. Congratulations and kudos to Ronald B. Shelton on this work. Of the several hundred books I have on the subject of mathematics and technical analysis of time series this fits in the top 2 or 3. Again, do not buy this book.
