Professor of management at Assumption College, in Worcester, Massachusetts. She earned a Ph.D. at the University of Massachusetts Amherst and an MBA at the Cass School of Business, City University, London. She has had expatriate assignments in Germany, the UK, Saudi Arabia, Japan, and Korea. Her interests include the role of culture in international business and the pedagogy of international management. Her publications include The Blackwell Encyclopedia of Management. Vol. VI: International Management, 2nd ed., Oxford, UK: Blackwell Publishing (2005); and The Blackwell Handbook of Global Management, Oxford, UK: Blackwell Publishing (2004). Her teaching, research and presentations have received many awards, including The Roethlisberger Best Paper of the Year Award from the Journal of Management Education and the Alpha Phi Alpha Teacher of the Year Award. Her articles have been included in journals and collections focused on teaching in the area of international business. She is an avid master rower and enjoys running, reading, and gardening.

Professor of strategy and international management at California Polytechnic University in San Luis Obispo. He earned a BS in business at Indiana University and MBA and PhD degrees at the University of Washington. He has authored or edited 14 books and monographs, over 110 published papers, and over 35 case studies; he serves on the editorial boards of several leading international academic journals; he served as the Saastamoinen Foundation Chair at the Helsinki School of Economics in Finland; he was the founding chair of the Strategic Alliances Committee of the Licensing Executives Society; he served as the chair of both the International Business and the Strategy and Policy divisions of the Administrative Sciences Association of Canada; and he is past chairperson of the Academy of Management’s International Management division. His research has appeared in the Strategic Management Journal, Academy of Management Journal, Journal of International Management, Columbia Journal of World Business, Management International Review, Journal of Management Studies, Human Resource Management Journal, Long Range Planning, Organisation Studies, and Journal of Applied Psychology, among others. He has received 11 “best paper” awards for his research, including the Decade Award for most influential article from the Journal of International Business Studies. His teaching performance has earned numerous awards in the United States, Canada, Asia, Africa, Australia, and Europe, including the University Distinguished Teacher Award. He was the first recipient of the International Educator Award from Cal Poly, and he endowed a scholarship for students to work and study internationally.

Professor of marketing and international business at the University of Texas, Pan American. He was educated at the University of North Carolina, American University, and Cornell and holds a PhD from Vanderbilt University. His research focuses on comparative consumer behavior, international marketing strategy, political risk, and the consumption of high-technology experiential products. He has published in the Journal of International Business Studies, the Journal of Consumer Marketing, International Studies of Management and Organization, the Journal of Services Marketing, International Business Review, Journal of Interactive Advertising, and elsewhere. About the Author
Wolfram Schnabel, born in Freiburg, Silesia, Germany, in 1931, is Professor Emeritus at the Technical University of Berlin. He obtained his PhD in Chemistry from Cologne University, Germany, and did post-doctoral research at Northwestern University, Evanston, USA. Subsequently he worked on his habilitation at the Technical University of Berlin and, in parallel, was researcher at the Hahn-Meitner-Institute Berlin, now merged in the Helmholtz Center Berlin for Materials and Energy. Wolfram Schnabel was appointed Professor at the Technical University of Berlin in 1974 and had this position until his retirement. He published well over 300 journal articles in the fields of macromolecular chemistry, photochemistry and radiation chemistry and is the author of three books.

Warm, clear, helpful, insightful

This book is a companion to Reeves's 'Breeze of the Centuries' (2010), being a continuation of his introduction of 'great theologians', beginning with Martin Luther in the sixteenth century and ending with Karl Barth in the mid twentieth century. Like his earlier book, it is written with warmth, clarity, and insight. Reeves covers six 'great theologians': Luther, Calvin, Owen, Edwards, Schleiermacher, and Barth. Each chapter is readable in one sitting with a cup of coffee, and is prefaced by a brief sketch of the man's life, and closes with suggestions for further reading.

The key strength of the book is its insight. Not only will Reeves explain and clarify things for the reader, but he will tell us why something is significant, or point out what someone didn't say (which may be more significant than what they did say). Yet for all that the author is a trained theologian, he writes as someone eager to help others understand: at heart, he is a teacher. Like the best teachers, he has an aim for us, and it is to get us reading the theologians for ourselves. I personally am not convinced that this is realistic. When he says that the 24 volumes of the Works of John Owen are 'most accessible', you wonder whether he sometimes forgets his reader. Yet the best teachers, it should be said, inspire others by their enthusiasm, and Reeves has this aplenty, and it is contagious. Perhaps he might do well to write a short course, perhaps for small groups and individuals, that looks at snippets of these theologians' works.

Of the six theologians he reviews it is far from clear why he chooses to write about John Owen. It's not clear that Owen was read by those who came after him (ie. Edwards, Schleiermacher, and Barth), and since Reeves admits there were other worthy contenders he left out because of constraints on space, one wonders why he didn't include someone else instead. Even Owen's life is dealt with far more briefly than the others. If his concern was to have an English theologian, why not Rowan WIlliams? He would seem an obvious choice, and one especially helpful to contemporary readers sizing up the issues facing the church (especially the Anglicans) today.

Reeves is a charitable writer. A conservative evangelical, he begs the reader to take Schleiermacher (a founder of liberal theology) seriously. This reviewer is tempted to be far less charitable to IVP, who have not provided an index. One hopes that a volume will appear which combines 'Breeze of the Centuries' and 'On Giants Shoulders' (and with room maybe for a couple more entries, including perhaps a female theologian?), and that it will have an index. Reeves writes with authority - you have to *really* know your stuff to write with such clarity - yet with no index it is unlikely his work will find a home in university libraries, where it is so desperately needed.
