Definetly NOT the best book ever written on the subject.

I was looking forward to getting this book based on all the giddy reviews about it...even though the makeups on the cover looked amateurish and suspiciously poorly lit. I wish I had gone with my instincts on this one. Most of this stuff is not what I consider makeup. Its cosplay. Seriously...one of the featured "makeups" shows you how to bedazzle a burlap sack and wear it over your head.
Even the basics presented here I would have to say are misguided. For instance, it tells you to paint straight black into wax or putty scratches to give the appearance of deeper wounds. Really? That's what I used to do when I first started and didn't know any better.
In my opinion Debrecini's book is the best book on the market right now, Savini's books will give you more insight about ingenuity and artistry, and Dick Smith's Monster Makeup Handbook will continue to be pulled from my shelf a thousand times more than I will ever refer to this dog turd of a book.

Better than "Grande Illusions" ?

I own several books and DVD's on special effects make-up including both of the Grande Illusion books, Movie FX Magazine Master classes, books by Vincent Kehoe, Thurston James and more... and let me tell you this one book covers more ground then any of them. Everything from basic eyeliner and blush to full head latex appliances, costumes, props and metalwork. It has dozens of projects for you to follow along with to create some breathtaking effects.

Now that isn't to say that this is perfect, the first and most obvious problem isn't really any fault of the original authors - but the copy I got from amazon has several mistakes and printing errors. But even with these errors the book is still very easy to follow.

Other problems might be that some of the information might have gaps as suggested by another reviewer... it is hard for me to tell because I have studied this subject so much that I can fill in the blanks without really thinking.

If you are on the fence about buying this book don't be, it is in full color with amazing full page artwork of the finished designs and step by step photos of everything. This book even answered questions some "professionals" I asked could not! For the money this book is very, VERY hard to beat.

Now if only someone would put out a book this detailed about animatronics!

Where was this book when I was kid?

This Book is a beautiful special effects book. The breakdown of the character work here is amazing. They teach you how to make high quality costumes and monster characters. This book is great it covers a lot of information in one book that is not always covered in other such books. The molding and casting, acrylic teeth, all kinds of cool crafting and fabrication for effects industry characters. I recommend that anyone wanting to get into Make-up effects grab this book. It is well done and has quite a bit of tech info.

The photos are high quality this book is worth the investment. This along with a few other texts could possibly help you launch your career as a beginner in the special make-up effects industry. Be sure to seek out other information on the subject as well to give you a well rounded starting point. Dick Smith, Richard Corson, Tom Savini, and a handful of other wonderful texts on the subject matters. The make-up industry secrets have come out, and this current books contributes to the body of that information. With updates on techniques and materials available.

Great book great starting point.

Where do I begin? This books unlocked the contemporary history of a city I lived in all my life. Delhi to me was an experience felt viscerally, without reflection, until the lid was blown off by books and blogs (Delhi Walla) like this.
Villages like Hauz Khaz, Munirka, Khirki are all represented here and an account of their history, daily life and social fabric is given.
There are several other phenomenon (un)covered, like colonies, resettlement, Lutyen's Delhi; the stuff of immigrant lore we were steeped in on our grandparent's knees if they had moved here during the partition.
The city's culture and social fabric stretches far beyond the resettled family's collective memory of post partition Delhi.
I'm going to read this book, re-read it, then pore over it's bibliography and the next time I'm home, I'll savor more than the street food.

Essential

I have seen him present at WUSS. I have attended his classes and presentations including one recently for free on the SAS website. I read all his papers. I believe he has the seminal book on the Macro Facility. Art Carpenter is probably the best single source, other than the Institute itself, to present excellent and exhaustive material on technical topics. He might be good for beginners attempting to get to the next level (e.g. mastering macros) but his advanced material will define what it means to be a senior programmer. Frankly, unless you have been programming since v5 and thus learned everything already, I think you need this book.

SAS Learning Never Stops

I've been programming in SAS over 10 years - so I love it when I can pick up a book and learn some new techniques. I just got this book yesterday and already I've picked up some notes about some of the finer points on PROC SORT (that tricky DUP option!)

Some of the information I was aware of - however I think someone with a little SAS programming experience will find this book useful. I skimmed the book and learned 2-3 functions (WHICHN, hash tables) I was unaware of.

Art has an easy to read and understand style and I probably I would never have learned Proc Report's finer points without his earlier book and SAS Global Forum Papers.

As an experienced SAS programmer in the pharmaceutical industry for close to 20 years now, I recognized some very `innovative' techniques that have worked well for me to solve challenging SAS programming tasks. I highly recommend this book for all levels of SAS programmers to really take advantage of cleaver SAS programming techniques.

The meaning of analysis

This book would more correctly be described as a book on analysis, because of the completeness of its proofs. It assumes you know just arithmetic of natural numbers, integers, rational, real and complex numbers-that is to say, just how to sum, multiply, subtract and divide. Edmund Landau wrote a masterpiece, because nothing is left without proof. You will not find a single step missing. From arithmetic to all the concepts of calculus, like differentiation, integration, infinite series and sequences, this book contains the mathematics that most mathematicians should know presented in a perfect way. It is not easy reading, though. Landau strives to reach the perfect axiomatic presentation, so like Euclid's "Elements" the book is the clear and beautiful presentation of a doctrine. I dare say that no book in analysis approaches Euclid's ideal of presentation better than Landau's, never in the past and never in the future. What you will find in this book is, in its best appearance, truth, that will not change even in a thousand years.

I give this book one star, not because it's a bad book--of its kind,it is not--but to sound a warning and to counter some of the rave reviews here. In the preface to his famous calculus text, the great Richard Courant speaks of a "smug and presumptuous purism" which had crept into the mathematics texts of his time and place (Germany, '20s and '30s). I suspect he had Landau's "completely rigorous" (and in my opinion, completely unreadable) calculus text. "Foundations of Analysis" is cut from the same monk's-hairshirt cloth. IF you really like math books that consist almost 100% of "definition-axiom-theorem-proof; definition-axiom-theorem-proof" style writing, and that defy the reader to penetrate a completely closed system of elegantly presented and almost contemptuously concise pure truths (or at least, pure deductions from axioms), then Landau is definitely for you, or at least worth a serious try. But if you like math books that contain base, ignoble, impure elements such as motivation, intuitive insight, historical information about the development of the number concept, or just an occasional prose oasis, you're better off looking elsewhere (e.g. Feferman, Mendelson, Henkin-Smith-et al). By comparison to Landau, Hardy's "Pure Mathematics" seems chatty and chummy; it's also a much better book which gives more insight into the foundations of analysis in its first chapter than the whole of "Foundations". To my mind, Landau's book is, to quote a very old joke, not so much "rigor" as rigor mortis.

A classic that should remain in print

Dover, please put this classic back into print!!
This does for numbers what Suppes (1960) did for ZF set theory.
