Author in Context indeed. Very well done book with lots of information.

I found this book very educational. It takes your through the many layers of who Geoffrey Chaucer may have been. It uses a variety of excellent sources and presents all it's information in a way as to inform the reader rather than impose a particular point of view on the subject. It gives you context on the time period, society and thought process of the day so the reader can begin to understand who this man was. I recommend re-reader the Canterbury tales and searching out a few other of his stories prior to reading this book since the author deals a lot with specific references from Chaucer's works. I'll be looking forward to other Oxford Author in Context volumes in the future!

My fiancee is a budding medievalist, and has been taking a class this semester on Chaucer, his life, his times, his writing. Her professor recommended this book to be read alongside her "Riverside Chaucer", which is the cornerstone of her life. I know almost nothing about Chaucer, or about this book, from a firsthand basis; however, from what I've learned simply by listening to my fiancee expound on this text has been quite fascinating.

About the Author
Alina Mungiu-Pippidi teaches democratization and policy analysis at the Hertie School of Governance in Berlin. She chairs the European Research Centre for Anti-Corruption and State Building Research and is Chair of Policy Pillar of the EU FP7 five-year research project, ANTICORRP. Professor Mungiu-Pippidi has served as an adviser on issues of governance measurement and anticorruption to the European Commission, UNDP, Freedom House, NORAD and the World Bank, among others. She is also a popular op-ed writer and the author of two film documentaries: 'Where Europe Ends' and 'A Tale of Two Villages,' screened by the BBC.

As young anti-corruption scholar I was very grateful for Alina Mungiu-Pippidi new book which subsumes the experiences of work in the international anti-corruption community and puts them into new light. In doing so Mungiu-Pippidi presents a solid theoretical framework while supplying solid evidence about the efficiency of different anti-corruption policies. Her historical references are particularly interesting even though I would wish for a more positive outlook for the future of anti-corruption effort.

Book in good shape overall, but too many marks

The book is in good shape overall, but there are so many pencil marks that I found it very difficult to read. I was disappointed with the overall amount of pencil marks and considered returning it because I couldn't read the book easily with almost 1/3 the lines in the book highlighted. The price was good, but there were more than just "some" pencil marks.
