BLACK, BY TRACY BROWN

When I started reading this book I immediately connected with the tradgedy's and triumphs of Kaia. I couldn't put the book down until I was finished. The fact that the book is titled "BLACK" doesn't really give anyone a clue as to what the book is really about. But the book leaves more to the imagination with a title as simple as that. I am a white woman who grew up with all races, especially black people. I was able to feel the pain for this character. I felt the joys. I also felt and knew the feeling of her being afraid of her mother. This book brought up more emotions than one would imagine. This book made me laugh, it made me angry, it made me happy, and it also made me cry and cry and cry! As a matter of fact I went to work the next day with swollen eyes. I feel that Tracy Brown went to the extreme on her first novel. To be able to make people feel the emotions of the characters in a book is strong and is not an easy task. No matter what race you are this book is a great book to read especially if you are ignorant to the fact of what really happens in other peoples lives. Great job Tracy! And my sincere thanks for the swollen eyes! I cried way after the book was finished! Until your next book.....

Wonderful!

This book was great! I read this book in one day. It will have you happy, angry and sad. Kaia's goes through some real tough times, but with love, loyalty and friendship, she is able to come to grips with all that life has thrown at her. Now this book is not your typical "street life" book, but has the elements. You will find yourself hating certain characters, while loving others. I laughed and cried while reading this book. This is a must read. It was simply wonderful!

Black is a story of Kaia Wesley who faces different adversities in the homefront growing up. With a mother who despises her and a father who adored her, Kaia life became even more complicated when she witnesses her fathers death.

Budding into a beautiful teenager, Kaia meets Aaron who falls head over heels in love with her and she with him. Finally having that sense of security and love that she deserves another hindrance arises that leaves her pregnant and alone to fend for herself. With the help and advice of her friends Kaia comes to stand on her own.

When one of her so-called friends betrays her, she will then find out who her real friends are. As the saying goes "Keep your friends close and enemies closer".

This novel will make you laugh, cry, and angry. Tracey Brown did a great job, minus the few grammatical errors that I came across throughout the book. I recommend Black to everyone, the young and the old, just simply wonderful.

Angie Hatch lives in Alabama with her husband and favorite building buddy, Jerry, and their kids. They have been married since 1994 and have four children, all of which have been on mission trips to Guatemala for Casas por Cristo. Angie is active in missions with her church and believes everyone should step out of the comforts of home and travel to a place where such comforts are not taken for granted so we can see how truly blessed we are.

Such a blessing to read!

What a great representation this is of what it is like to serve for the first time in a third world country! Angie does a wonderful job portraying life in Guatemala and the emotions we privileged Americans experience when we see the simplicity of living life there and being the hands and feet of Christ to those precious people. I was in tears by the end recalling my own experience. Everybody should read this! If you've served in missions you'll be blessed by the store of emotions it causes. If you haven't served in missions you'll want to!

Sean Adams and Noreen Morioka are partners of AdamsMorioka in Los Angeles. Their ideas of clarity and purity have continued to lead a revolution in the design world from complexity, chaos and distopia to simplicity and honesty.

Since AdamsMorioka's founding in 1993, the firm has been globally recognized by every major competition and designation including; Communication Arts, AIGA, Graphis, The Type Directors Club, The British Art Director's Club, ID, and the New York Art Director's Club. AdamsMorioka was recently given a solo exhibition by The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. Design workbook? Huh?

For the most part, this book contains a bunch of example logo designs. Starting on page 99, the book contains only case studies.Before page 99, the book covers basic terminology and a design process at a very high level. The design process, however, is really just a bunch of example logo designs prefaced by a laundry list containing a process.

In short, read this book if you want to see a bunch of great example logo designs, but stay away if you're expecting a "design workbook".

Very Helpful Tool!

As recently as 5 years ago when I started freelancing, I wanted to know the ins and outs of creating a logo. A brand that lasts. I came across this book under the recommendation of some colleagues at Linkedin.com and I purchased a copy.

After reviewing it, I was amazed at all the things that actually go into creating a logo and now I try to stick by those. I am not a great Logo creator just yet and there is always room for improvement, but this book really give me the insight I needed in order to take the first steps.

This is a great book for designers of all levels. It gives great explanations as to how one style of logo would work best over another based on its application. Color variation is discussed as well as detailed case studies and ways of presenting a logo to the client. The book is filled with pictures and variations of logos which makes this book very practical and inspiring. If you love design, this book is a must have and a great addition to your library. I'm glad I bought it!

Full Coverage

This was pretty much the only book we used while traveling in the Perigord.
Frankly---it was MORE than enough. It covered the region splendidly.
Additionally, the writing style was very enjoyable...which we do enjoy in a travel book.
Nice pictures without being overdone.

Dordogne one-book guide

This guidebook has been very helpful in planning a trip to the Dordogne--history, accommodations, sites. The fine photographs help visualize the places. The print is a little small but this is a small quibble for an excellent guidebook. This is the only book you will need.

Succint Coverage of VB

Amazon's author listing is not right: the authors listed inside the book are Peter Norton, Harold Davis and Phyllis Davis. The Norton book on each VB version has a different set of authors, so it is not clear that the same quality always applies.
A great deal of VB has to do with Forms and Controls, which are discussed but are not my point of view. I like this book because of Chapter 4: Programming in VB. This chapter gives a very concise and clear summary of all the language features under the rubric "What's still BASIC in Visual Basic?" Chapter 4 also includes class modules, and some more details are given later in Chapter 14 in an example that controls Excel from VB. I also appreciated Chapter 12: Error-Handling and Debugging, which explains both coding with the On Error feature of VB, as well as the use of the VB debugging tools.
These items comprise about 1/10th of the book. But because of its age I found this book for much less than its original price, which made the book worthwhile even so.

Learn VB4 and object oriented programmig concepts.

Norton's VB4 code examples in this book enables a person with a Basic programming background to quickly gain an intermediate understanding of Object Oriented Programming concepts. Norton leads you through the code examples beginning with detailed explinations of what the code does and progresses from a "beginner" status to an "intermediate" understanding. In the process, he covers many important VB4 keywords, programming techniques, and builds code examples that can be used be used and modified either as building blocks for your own programs or from which to experiment.

I carefully studied Norton's book and examples page by page over a period of about a month, and was able to begin developing my own software thereafter. Only a few advanced topics using database objects and certain OCX controls required the Professional version. I am now ready for advanced topics.

Don't waste your money

Unless you need work on your typing skills, find another book. The explanations of the code are inadequate to describe the underlying concepts. At many points in the book, a programming technique is introduced via the code examples with no explanation whatsoever. The chapter on linking to 'C' is so poorly written one wonders why they bothered. There are a few nuggets inside of the book, but you'll have to dig and you will need a moderate amount of experience in another language to comprehend the coding examples. Better books are available, such as the "Using Visual Basic" series. Serious VB developers should check out Deborah Kurata's "Doing Objects in Visual Basic 5.0" or anything by Dan Appleman.

POWERFUL!

I was going to say that this is less a book of poetry than a work of art, but a book of poetry is a work of art and especially these days, a work of hope. There are those about who are experimenting with the question of what it is that makes a book, and I would say that Metres belongs in what I take to be a small, thoughtful and provocative crowd. Not only has he drawn his inspiration from a wide variety of sources, he has included diagrams that overlay some poems, fingerprints and calligraphy.

Most visible - after the stunning cover art (http://aalkadhi.com/content/I_am_baghdad/) - are the redactions. In Guantanamo Diary, an excellent companion piece, they are political. Here too, they are poltical, but they are also art, negative space reclaimed, much in the spirit of a British artist I've always admired, Rachel Whiteread (https://www.gagosian.com/artists/rachel-whiteread/selected-works).

But Metres' use of the redaction is not a gimmick. From the title of the collection, StANDard OPERAting procedure, to the opening invocation in 'Illumination of the Martyrdom of St. Bartholomew' (if the flesh is the text of God / bid a voice to rise / / & rise again) to the closing prayer, 'Compline' (We lift the blinds, look out into ink / For light. My God, my God, open the spine binding our sight), Metres is a master of juxtaposition, placing words, images, even punctuation next to (and on top) of each other as he explores power, particularly the power of language, in the Iraqi conflict, in the cells of Guantanamo.

Consider the line quoted above from 'Compline.' It's the last poem of the collection, and by then almost every word of those lines carries tremendous weight. Who does Metres mean by 'we'? Does 'lift' have a positive connotation? Does it suggest physical force? What and who is blind? Blindfolded? And we see ink? Words? There's freedom there? Power? A reclaiming? And the first 'My God,' how should we say it? And what of the possessive? Whose God is it? The 'spine' of a book (as we get set to close Metres'?) "Binding' - Again, who is bound? Who's doing the binding? 'Our' - Again, first person plural. Who does it include? What does Metres want to see? Want us to see?

I could go on. But you should read it first.

Shock and Awe

Metres reminds us that "Somewhere someone's hands danced / over a keyboard to deliver the ordnance." Here, drone strike and typescript poem dovetail uncomfortably in the figure of a dexterous manipulated dance, the keyboard also suggesting an organ or Moog synthesizer to score this operatic sand opus for all who have ears to hear. Such overlays are further echoed in this book as object, vellum over paper enacting claustrophobic fatalities: "And: this hole was where he died, where they drove through a berm, into the Tigris. They told me about the scratch marks. I tried not to look, but I couldn't stop thinking about him trying to scratch his way out, the tank filling with water." Told me about. Tried not to look. Couldn't stop thinking. This reminds me of poetry's moral imperative as antidote to social mayhem, exemplifying Roethke's quip how "in a dark time, the eye begins to see." And shocked and awed voices begin to sing.

The short Menexenus contains a pastiche of celebratory public oratory, illustrating its self-delusions. In the Protagoras, another important contribution to moral and political philosophy in its own right, Socrates takes on leading intellectuals (the 'sophists') of the later fifth century BC and their pretensions to knowledge. The dialogues are introduced and annotated by Malcolm Schofield, a leading authority on ancient Greek political philosophy.

The translation is both fully pleasurable to read and true to Plato's vernacular and dramatic intentions; the introduction is clear-eyed, smart, free of dogma, and non-didactic; and the format and apparatus provide every kind of help to be hoped for from a non-commentary. It is refreshingly oriented away from establishing or asserting Plato's views about politics, justice, democracy, or some factitious version of 'rhetoric.' The combination of three texts makes particular pedagogical sense, and for such a combination this edition wins out over alternative competing versions.
Griffith translates the conversations vividly and brilliantly, in a colloquial but elegant English, full of sensitivity to Socrates' modulation of rapport with his interlocutors."
