Best transcribed piano book I've seen

I think more music books need this much devotion and dedication put into them, not only are a good portion of Jelly Roll Morton's greatest songs that were composed and performed in the early 20th century, but also indicated all the recording dates of the song, original tempo, and a short description of the history and style of the song. The book starts off with a history on Jelly Roll's life and I got more out of that than I did on any wikipedia or web page I used to research the most influential jazz performer of that time period. It also describes Jelly Roll's style and compares it to that of later jazz/stride pianists, stating that Jelly Rolls music might not have been as great as those of later stride pianists, but for the style Jelly Roll created, it truly was the best. Jelly Rolls music reflects the time period and style of ragtime mixed with early jazz and even a little blues. The transcriptions are identical to the actual recordings and some are playable for intermediate players, and will even challenge the advanced pianist who is not familiar with Morton's style. I believe most pieces in this book are playable if practiced long enough, and aren't as difficult to play as say stride or certain types of classical, except maybe fingerbuster. These pieces are all fun to play and learn, and just transcribed so beautifully that if played with the right tempo and fingering techniques will impress your audiences. It even shows the changes made to the original Jelly Roll transcription, which shows the people behind making this book really cared about getting the true Jelly Roll note for note transcriptions of his most popular pieces. It is a must own for any aspiring pianist in my opinion and well worth the price.

Excellent collection (as stated in the other reviews) but unfortunately not spiral bound... Prepare to either wrestle the book into staying open or to make photocopies of the particular pieces you're interested in.

Scholarly & technically challenging

This scholarly and technically challenging presentation of "Jelly Roll" Morton's work may be a gem for a serious jazz pianist or a potentially serious one with excellent skill and training. However, it is too advanced for a casual and inexperienced non-jazz pianist like me. I'm better off playing Joplin's music and listening to "Jelly Roll" Morton CD's.

Adam Gussow is an associate professor of English and Southern Studies at the University of Mississippi and a professional blues harmonica player and teacher. Perfect Book for the Grand Tour

This is a truly astonishing book. Set back in 1984, a time before the web, before cell phones, before e-mail, two grad students fly from NYC to backpack through Europe. McKay Chernoff, the protagonist, sets off to heal a broken heart, and his buddy, Paul Goldberg, well, he's off to get some relief from studying ancient texts. But what makes this book so fascinating is that McKay is a blues musician who discovers the joys of busking in Paris, Avignon, and other cities. Gussow's descriptions of what it's like to lose yourself in the blues, and the many characters he plays with along the way, will have older readers wondering why they put their guitars down. Younger readers, one hopes, will pick up the guitar and the harmonica, and both will rediscover Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, and the great, great Magic Dick. Gussow's writing combines wild, ecstatic scenes with incredible precision. And he is a poet of considerable skill. At strategic points, he drops in powerful lyrics on Florence, sex, and getting fed up with always writing about the women who leave him. This is a book that brilliantly describes what it's like to be wandering through Europe without a care in the world other than tending to one's amours and harmonicas. Strongly, strongly recommended.

EUROPE OR BUST !!

For anyone who was in their early 20's in the late 60's, early 70's will be able to relate to this even if they didn't make it to Europe. Since there was such a large part of that generation that was seeking freedom and many traveled all over the country and the majority of them would go from one music festival to the next one for the music and drugs were all they craved.
Adam is a fantastic musician and a really down to earth type of guy who is very intelligent. However he uses all the above to really bring to life what it was like traveling through different countries where there was a very large amount of people from all over the world doing the same thing.
That thing was to explore the different countries and meet the people while trying to earn some money by playing music with several different people he meets up with. It's really funny the way he explains some of the characters and places using what I would call, intelligent wit. You may not understand some of the words he uses to explain who or what he is talking about....but you can still find the humor behind it all. It's a great book and it was fun reading it even when I didn't really understand some of the language or vocabulary. Great job.

Within the pages hides friendship, freedom, libertine excesses, and an innocence forever lost to us. Gussow whisks us along on a journey for the ages, and we happily come along because, simply, we want to be this cool. Fast as hell and a riot of sights and sounds, there is a warmth here which only comes from the expert manipulation of the language. An excellent read!

Dejan Sarka is a mentor with SolidQ and focuses on development of database and business intelligence applications. He is a frequent speaker at international conferences such as TechEd, SqlDevCon, and PASS. He is the founder of the Slovenian SQL Server and .NET Users Group. As main author or coauthor, Dejan has written nine books about SQL Server. He has also developed three courses for SolidQ: Data Modeling Essentials, Data Quality and Master Data Management, and Data Mining.

Bought it, passed it.

I just passed the exam with a score of 831 on my first try at 62 years of age. This book was my primary study guide, but I vacillated between giving 3 or 4 stars. Here's how I arrived at four:

The book itself would have been a solid five except for numerous editing errors, which I find somewhat inexcusable especially when you take the quiz at the end of a chapter only to find that the book had some wrong answers. I'm glad I had a later edition so I didn't have to put up with scrambled chapters. I've written books myself so I am at a loss as to how so many errors could have slipped by. I'll blame it on the editors (or lack thereof) - just make sure you print out the errata page from the O'Reilly site as a reference. So for bad editing, I subtract .5 stars.

And then there's the practice exam...
This has got to be the worst practice exam out there for this test. The questions bear little resemblance to the real thing in either format or difficulty. If you barely pass this exam YOU WILL NOT PASS THE REAL THING. I was getting about 95% on the MeasureUp exam and then bought the Transcender exam after reading some of the reviews here. My 95% was worth 60% (FAIL) on the Transcender exam, which is much closer to the real exam in difficulty. I am not trying to sell you on Transcender as I feel it was over-priced considering that it too has accuracy issues.

Bottom line, I was ready to deduct two stars for the worthless exam (which another reviewer did) but decided to view it as a flawed bonus, like those coupons that print on your grocery receipt for items you just bought. So another .5 deduction - four stars seems about right. I would prefer that they didn't include the test as it could raise one's confidence unjustifiably.

Buy this training kit for the well-written, well organized, occasionally-flawed text and use it as a guide as you also include other sources from other books or the web, especially the MSDN site. Regard the worthless test as practice but beware of wrong answers. And, of course, good luck on your exam.

Book is great, sample exam is less than useless

The book is good. It covers everything on the exam, gives good tips, has lots on info and points to great links when it doesn't have space to give pages and pages of detail.. Content all seems accurate to me. It's a bit of a tome,but its all good and necessary info.

If your buying for the practice exam that comes on the included DVD, don't. Questions have zero representation to the actual exam. They are way too simple and short and have no resemblance to the exam in structure, content or difficult.

As the book is good, and if this review was for the book alone, I'd give full stars, but it loses 2 stars as the practice exam (a big reason I got the book) was so rubbish.

Conclusion- great book, crap sample exam.

I bought the e-book version. Very well written and easy to follow. It has excellent hands-on practice tests the end of each chapter. If you're like me somewhat new to SQL, I recommend to start with Itzik's Microsoft SQL Server 2012 T-SQL Fundamentals book. Having read both books and went over SQL syntax from Microsoft MSDN, I was able to write the 70-461 test and passed it. 70-462 is next!
