Busker's Holiday, by Adam Gussow

From award-winning blues scholar and musician Adam Gussow, a taut, sexy first novel about the summer busking scene in Europe and a pair of wild-hearted young men who make a pitch for fame and glory, finding a girl or two along the way.

Busker’s Holiday is the story of McKay Chernoff, a Columbia University grad student with a harmonica in his pocket and a blues band in his background. Desolate and despairing after a disastrous romantic breakup, McKay decides to fly off to Paris and reinvent himself as a street performer.

What follows is an epic summer voyage into the busking life, propelled by the mad exploits of Billy Lee Grant, a fearless young guitar shredder whose Memphis-to-Mississippi pedigree and Dylanesque surrealism make him, when he explodes into view, precisely the partner McKay has been yearning for.

Burning like a latter-day Dean Moriarty, Bill goads McKay into a sun-drenched, all-night bender, stoked by wine, women, mushrooms, and trains, that careens down out of Avignon and across the French Riviera. What happens next—in Florence, Solingen, Amsterdam, Paris—is a story of purgatory, redemption, and love regained. Hope, in a word, as a modern troubadour returns from his wanderings, reborn.

Review
"...Gussow outdoes himself with the novel's revolving cast of unique characters, whose crazy times and back stories are endlessly entertaining.  The novel is about the trip of a lifetime, going to Europe to forget everything, but it's also a story of friendship, helped tremendously by Gussow's ear for music and dialogue.  A strongly written, cool novel about being young, bluesy, and free on a vagabond adventure in Europe."--Kirkus Reviews

"Gussow takes you on an unforgettable trip filled with colorful characters, raging hormones, sexual tension, young men's Sturm und Drang, music, and more music....As a European who was himself a busker in the streets, alleys and market squares in Europe in the 1970s, this reviewer was fascinated by the vividly accurate and realistic settings, drenched in rich descriptions of scene and place. Considering that Gussow's real life Euro-busking experience was 30 years ago, his recollection details of place and time, and, most importantly, the feelings of the experience that he manages to convey, are simply remarkable."--Frank Matheis, TheCountryBlues.com

"Busker's Holiday is strung between espressos and bluesy harmonica poetry, a linguistic tour-de-force dancing like rain drops on the Paris streets."-- Paul Maher, Jr., author of Kerouac: The Definitive Biography

"A rocking guttersnipe's lament across Europe, one that stings and swings.  A lively coming-of-age tale inspired by Kerouac and Magic Dick."--R. J. Smith, author of The One:  The Life and Music of James Brown.

Perfect Book for the Grand Tour
By Peter C. Herman
This is a truly astonishing book. Set back in 1984, a time before the web, before cell phones, before e-mail, two grad students fly from NYC to backpack through Europe. McKay Chernoff, the protagonist, sets off to heal a broken heart, and his buddy, Paul Goldberg, well, he's off to get some relief from studying ancient texts. But what makes this book so fascinating is that McKay is a blues musician who discovers the joys of busking in Paris, Avignon, and other cities. Gussow's descriptions of what it's like to lose yourself in the blues, and the many characters he plays with along the way, will have older readers wondering why they put their guitars down. Younger readers, one hopes, will pick up the guitar and the harmonica, and both will rediscover Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, and the great, great Magic Dick. Gussow's writing combines wild, ecstatic scenes with incredible precision. And he is a poet of considerable skill. At strategic points, he drops in powerful lyrics on Florence, sex, and getting fed up with always writing about the women who leave him. This is a book that brilliantly describes what it's like to be wandering through Europe without a care in the world other than tending to one's amours and harmonicas. Strongly, strongly recommended.

EUROPE OR BUST !!
By Joseph J. Welsh
For anyone who was in their early 20's in the late 60's, early 70's will be able to relate to this even if they didn't make it to Europe. Since there was such a large part of that generation that was seeking freedom and many traveled all over the country and the majority of them would go from one music festival to the next one for the music and drugs were all they craved.
Adam is a fantastic musician and a really down to earth type of guy who is very intelligent. However he uses all the above to really bring to life what it was like traveling through different countries where there was a very large amount of people from all over the world doing the same thing.
That thing was to explore the different countries and meet the people while trying to earn some money by playing music with several different people he meets up with. It's really funny the way he explains some of the characters and places using what I would call, intelligent wit. You may not understand some of the words he uses to explain who or what he is talking about....but you can still find the humor behind it all. It's a great book and it was fun reading it even when I didn't really understand some of the language or vocabulary. Great job.

A Fast and Joyful Read!
By Heath Mensher
Itzhak Perlman said, “The drama of silence between notes is important.” In “Busker’s Holiday,” what is left unsaid is often just as powerful as the author’s deft turns of phrase. Within the pages hides friendship, freedom, libertine excesses, and an innocence forever lost to us. Gussow whisks us along on a journey for the ages, and we happily come along because, simply, we want to be this cool. Fast as hell and a riot of sights and sounds, there is a warmth here which only comes from the expert manipulation of the language. An excellent read!
