Excellent For Today's Directing Student

My enthusiasm for this book is rooted in my impression that many aspiring film students today, enter school with at least some delusion of entitlement and privilege. My generation embraced those traits en masse back in the 60's and 70's, and we've done a good job of passing them on. Thus, today's classroom is handicapped by a percentage of young adults who have little experience with being part of an ensemble. Another factor has been that many young artists are well into adulthood before they can effectively articulate their thoughts, and more importantly, their feelings. These skills are simply essential in filmmaking.
So how does a college instructor evoke these critical, yet often lacking skills in contemporary directing students? The strength of, "EYE of the STORM" is that it provides an effective and dependable syllabus for promoting precisely that kind of environment, one where directing students learn to benefit from working with their fellow filmmakers as a team.
In many ways, directing students haven’t changed much over the years. They are still mostly young and inexperienced, running on lofty dreams, raw energy, and (too often) ego. With their own project under one arm (where they are deemed a supreme leader) and a stack of classmate's projects under the other (where they will provide services ranging from editor to holding a reflector) they must master not only filmmaking skills but the ability to lead and be led. This text champions ensemble filmmaking over the auteur, and I would suggest that even auteurs, if there really is such a thing, are dependent on collaborative skills to communicate and persuade, probably more so.
The sections in this book are concise, informative, and reflect the knowledge and diversity of its authors. While some of the basics can be found in other books, what sets this apart is its voice. It defines some absolutes and rules, but doesn't jeopardize its nature to be accessible and inspiring. It promotes laboratory over lecture, group achievement over individual, and provides an inviting outline from which to experience it. I have seen many other textbooks on this subject, but found "EYE of the STORM" to have more potential as a curriculum guide than any I know.

Not just a textbook

This is an outstanding textbook for the serious student, but also a great book for those of us who have always wondered "How do they do that?". Before reading this book, I never realized how different the directing process would be for comedy vs. drama, for television vs. feature films. EYE OF THE STORM covers it all, including off stage issues like the casting process, working with writers and producers, even adhering to budgets and schedules. Read this book; you'll learn a lot.

Best book out there on directing

This book is a real treasure!
I have always been interested in the movie biz and read many books and articles on the subject, but never has a book captured the reality of directing in the same way that Eye of the Storm: Directing for Film, Television, and Emerging Media does. Here you will discover what the job of directing is really like and also how to handle all the various problems and challenges that crop up. This book doesn't read like a textbook and focuses on specific skills not addressed in film school such as collaborating with screenwriters, actors, production personnel, editors and even creative executives.
There are tons of tips from experts and even a chapter on directing voice actors in post and for animation. You will find practical, realistic information in this book that is not available anywhere else.
