One of the Most Important Arthurian Tales
By Marco Antonio Abarca
The story of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight is one of the great tales of Arthurian legend. Selena Hastings does a skillful job of retelling the story in such a way as to make it accessable to children. The illustrations that accompany the book are also first rate. However, one of the key plot elements revolves around the attempted seduction of Sir Gawain. Seduction is a difficult concept to explain to a young child. Consequently, this book is better suited for older children or young adults. Sir Gawain's encounter with the Green Knight is a bed rock tale of Arthurian legend and this book is a great introduction to that story. Highly recommended.

"I Give You My Word..."
By R. M. Fisher
Writer Selina Hastings and illustrator Juan Wijngaard have collaborated on two Arthurian-themed picture books, both of which retell the adventures of Sir Gawain (who seems to get all the best stories): this and Sir Gawain and the Loathly Lady. Both showcase his bravery, his kindness and his honour rather than feat of arms or physical strength, making them important reading material even today.

Hasting's retelling hits all the main points of what was originally a late 14th century poem, telling of one fateful Christmas Day at King Arthur's court in Camelot. His people are enjoying the feast when their celebrations are interrupted by a terrifying figure: a huge Green Knight (green hair, green skin, green clothing) upon an equally green horse, carrying an axe and issuing a challenge to the court - that one among them is permitted to strike a blow against him, if in one year's time he is permitted to do the same in return. Gawain steps forward, and with the Green Knight's own axe severs his head from his shoulders.

But to everyone's horror, the Greek Knight's body simply picks up the head and tucks it under his arm, reminding Gawain that he'll expect him one year's hence at the Green Chapel.

A year goes by and Gawain intends to keep his promise, much to the sorrow of his friends and fellow knights. Searching the land for the preordained meeting place, he eventually finds a castle in the depths of the forest. There he's invited inside by Sir Bercilak, a hospitable man who proposes a playful bargain with him: that each night he will give Gawaine whatever he has killed during the daily hunt, if Gawaine gives *him* whatever he receives during the days spent with Bercilak's wife at the castle.
Gawaine agrees, though keeping this bargain is easier said than done considering Bercilak's beautiful wife is intent on seducing Gawaine - and with every day that passes, he grows closer to certain death at the waiting hands of the Green Knight.

It is an ingenious little story, filled with plenty of twists and turns, as well as themes of tests and temptation, fallibility and chivalry. Hastings keeps most of the little nuances of the story, including Morgan le Fay's involvement and the true nature of Bercilak (though the conclusion is wrapped up rather swiftly, without any closure on the fate of the Green Knight), making this a vivid retelling of the tale.

The story is lengthy, which means that many double-spreads are void of any illustrations (which may test the patience of youngsters) but Wijngaard's art is gorgeous. Everything is meticulously detailed, from the embroidery on the women's clothing to the tattered state of Gawaine's armour when he finally arrives at Bercilak's castle. Landscapes capture the chilly winter season and everything about the figures (their expressions, their stances) feels realistic and immediate.

In short, this is a valuable retelling of the old ballad, making it accessible and enjoyable for young readers, and well-matched with Sir Gawain and the Loathly Lady. This is one of the most memorable and important stories of all Arthurian legend, and together Hastings and Wijngaard do it justice.

Still a great story.
By Scifi Fan
I use this story in my British Literature class. It is a good children's story, but it might be a little gory for the little kids. I use it to discuss characterization and theme after we have finished The Canterbury Tales.
