Mud Blossom is a story of love and hate; vengeance and redemption. During that period, the Yue Kingdom was conquered by the much stronger Wu Kingdom. Fan Li, the top advisor of King Goujian of Yue, came up with a plan to restore the country. He offered up Xi Shi, the mesmerizing beauty he loved to Fuchai, the King of Wu; to seduce and distract him. King Fuchai indulged in seeking pleasure, and gradually lost sight of the quiet expansion of the vengeful King of Yue, giving Yue the opportunity to turn the tide. Xi Shi: our heroine of this tale was a young and beautiful silk yarn washer in Yue Kingdom. She and Fan Li met by chance on the bank of a stream, and they fell in love despite the vast difference in their stations. After their country was conquered by the Wu Kingdom and facing being annexed; Fan Li persuaded Xi Shi to sacrifice their love and personal happiness, for the sake of king and country. Xi Shi agreed to his proposal, and entered the Wu King's Inner Court, to endure a precarious and sensual existence for many years. She was inadvertently caught between the conflicts of these two kingdoms, and the two powerful men who loved her. Throughout history, Xi Shi had been alternately lauded as a savior of her people, or maligned as a fox spirit with base morals. She was like a lotus blossom rising out of muddy water, yet retained its purity! Note: Xi Shi was one of the four legendary beauties in Chinese history. Out of four of them, the author decided to write Xi Shi's fascinating story; because she greatly admired this historical woman's courage and resolution: in an age when the Chinese society regarded its women as mere chattels.

About the Author
Teresa Ng is a Chinese/American born in Hong Kong and educated in the United States. Prior to retirement, she had twenty-three years of a career in Insurance Underwriting and also ten years part-time position in a county library. Currently, she and her husband are making their home in a beautiful senior community in Kensington, Maryland. The Ng's are blessed with three children and six grandchildren. About ten years ago, while on the job in the library, Teresa was inspired by the abundance of Chinese cultural reading materials there. She started writing and illustrating books mostly based upon the culture, legends, and wisdom of ancient China. Today, Teresa is dividing her time in homemaking, painting and participating in the "Creative Writing" program inside her vibrant senior community. She Has recently published another historical novel with a title of, Dream Peony, in Kindle Edition. A tale of great beauty and sacrifice in Ancient China

It is a pity that this novel isn't more popular. I guess there is a very very small market for historical fiction about ancient China. However, I have to say I thoroughly enjoyed this book.
The story follows that of Xi Shi, one of the four legendary Beauties of China. Players of Dynasty Warriors etc, may recognize the name of another of the Four Beauties - Diao Chan. But this book is strictly of Xi Shi. The plot is very exciting and fast paced. During a politically chaotic period when China was still in many kingdoms, the Kingdom of Yue was defeated by the neighboring Kingdom of Wu. The King of Yue's advisor Fan Li, is sent on a mission to find the most beautiful women in China to train and offer to the enemy, in hopes that they will distract King Fuchai of Wu, while Yue tried to recuperate its losses. In a sad twist of fate, Fan Li's true love and bethrothed, Xi Shi, is selected as one of the tribute concubines. Torn between duty and love, Fan Li and Xi Shi's story is one of the most romantic historical legends in China. I felt very lucky to find this English version.

Teresa Ng has a beautiful gift for story telling

Teresa Ng has a beautiful gift for story telling. I enjoyed the progression of the story told from the two protagonists. It was a wonderful trip in ancient China, its customs and settings.
However, as mentioned in a previous review, the book needs serious editing. At the beginning of the book, before the prologue and the chapter listing, there’s a note that for the Second Edition: 2013 ‘’The author has addressed some minor errors in the original text, which will not affect the story content of Mud Blossom.’’ I don’t know which errors were addressed as the book is left with so many errors that the reading is, at times, quite difficult.
I don’t mind the occasional typo, even the best editor is human. However, the constant misuse of punctuation makes it necessary to read a sentence 2-3 times to make sense of it. Unfortunately, and like so many people, Teresa Ng seems to think that punctuation is some kind of decoration to be used randomly. It is not. Punctuation can completely change the meaning or remove all meaning in a sentence. We see semi-colons instead of comas and commas where there shouldn’t be any.
There is also frequent confusion between the present and past tense of verbs and participles. I often had to ‘’rewrite’’ a sentence in my mind to make sense of it before reading the next one. Some words also needed ‘’rewriting’’ such as ‘’his exalted statue’’ which should have been ‘’his exalted status’’ or ‘’bought’’ instead of ‘’brought’’, etc.
Am I glad I read this book? Yes, I am. Would I read another book from this author? Probably not. I read to learn and for pleasure. I certainly learned a lot but much of the reading pleasure was taken away by the constant need to mentally edit as I was reading, not as a grammar purist but simply to make sense of the sentences.
Finally, a note to Teresa Ng: You have a beautiful gift for story telling and you obviously researched your subject well. In my humble opinion, you have the potential to become another Pearl S. Buck (one of my favorite authors.) But please, please invest some time and money in professional editing before presenting your books to the public. Punctuation, verb tense and the correct words do matter a lot and online spelling and grammar check is not sufficient. I feel Mud Blossom is like a beautiful child fed just enough to keep him alive but not enough to thrive and reach his full potential.
